Gameplay

Project Mirai 2 introduces touch screen controls where players tap the bottom screen, adding to the button controls from the original. The game features an increased sense of speed and additional gimmicks. On harder settings, up to three different marker colors appear. Thicker lines on the trail require holding down the touch screen, and rainbow-colored lines prompt spinning in circles. The original button-based play style remains available, now requiring the directional D-pad alongside A, B, X, and Y buttons. Thicker lines in this mode require holding buttons, and rainbow parts are performed by rotating the Circle Pad. Two-line parts demand simultaneous use of both button sets. A mini-game based on Puyo Puyo, called Puyo Puyo 39, is included, and the My Room and Augmented Reality features return.

Reception

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. Morgan Sleeper of Nintendo Life called it one of the 3DS' greatest hits, praising its rhythm game core, presentation, and variety of activities. GameRevolution gave it a nine out of ten, commending controls, song count, creation tools, and videos, while noting distracting background videos. Kyle Burleson of Destructoid considered it his least favorite Hatsune Miku game, criticizing its lack of difficulty but appreciating the content.
