History

Mavin Records was formed after D'banj left Mo' Hits, with allegations that D'banj signed the label over to Don Jazzy. Don Jazzy told Sunday Punch that both he and D'banj decided the partnership was not working and they had to move on, and he was hesitant about changing the name. According to BellaNaija, 'Mavin' describes someone gifted and skilled. Don Jazzy believed the label would become dominant in African music. The label launched its website and social networking site, the Mavin League, a day before its founding. After rebranding, Don Jazzy signed Tiwa Savage in June 2012, and in November 2012 Pulse Nigeria reported the signings of producers Aluko 'Altims' Timothy and Sunday 'BabyFresh' Enejere. Don Jazzy secured endorsement deals with Samsung and Loya Milk; Savage signed with Pepsi. Within a year, Mavin released 'Take Banana' and 'Oma Ga' as singles from Solar Plexus. In February 2014, Don Jazzy signed Di'Ja, Reekado Banks, and Korede Bello a week apart. On 1 May 2014, the label released 'Dorobucci'. On 25 February 2015, Don Jazzy and Savage signed endorsement deals with Konga.com. On 31 October 2016, Iyanya signed with Mavin, confirmed by both parties on Instagram. On 28 February 2017, Don Jazzy announced the signings of Johnny Drille, Ladipoe, and DNA. In January 2019, Mavin secured a multi-million dollar investment from Kupanda Holdings, a subsidiary of Kupanda Capital and TPG Growth. Rema's deal was announced in March 2019. On 31 May 2019, the label unveiled Crayon and released 'All is in Order' the next day.

Departures

Wande Coal's departure followed a dispute. After he released 'Kilaju' without Mavin's support, he put out 'Baby Face' on 5 November 2013, saying Shizzi produced it. Don Jazzy accused him of intellectual property theft on Twitter, uploading a studio demo from the previous year. Wande Coal denied the accusations and tweeted a link to an 'original' version. Entertainment lawyer Demilade Olaosun told Premium Times that Mavin owned the intellectual property because the song was produced by an employee, but noted the contract was not public. Mavin formally announced Wande Coal's departure on 7 November 2013. Iyanya announced his exit on Beat FM in February 2018, saying he was signed to Temple Music but remained 'a Mavin for life' and that there was no beef. Reekado Banks announced his departure on 7 December 2018 and launched Banks Music that day. In May 2019, Universal Music Group announced Tiwa Savage's signing, revealing she had left Mavin; Don Jazzy congratulated her. On 9 May 2020, Guardian Life Magazine reported D'Prince's exit after his eight-year contract expired; he had founded Jonzing World before leaving. D'Prince told Ifeanyi Ibeh on Twitter that his deal ended on 8 May 2020, calling it an amazing 16 years under his brother Don Jazzy.
