Plot
A year after the events of the first book, Sunny Nwazue, an American-born Nigerian albino girl from Aba and a member of the secret Leopard society, is troubled by recurring visions of a burning city. While collecting tainted pepper, she receives a comb from Mami Wata. Breaking Leopard rules, she and her friend Chichi use a juju to frighten a cult that is haunting Chukwu at the university. As punishment, Sunny is sent to the Obi Library basement to confront a djinn, which she defeats. After reuniting with her family and friends, her father threatens to disown her. Later, the spirit Ekwensu attacks, separating Sunny from her spirit face, Anyanwu. Sunny and her friends Orlu, Chichi, and Sasha visit Bola, who directs Sunny to Lagos to find Udide, a spider who will weave a flying grasscutter to carry them to Osisi. With Chukwu's help, they disguise a trip to Lagos as a road trip. Udide weaves the grasscutter in exchange for Sunny's story. After a series of events, Chukwu spots the grasscutter, and they flee before the council car arrives. In Osisi, they defeat Ekwensu to prevent an apocalypse. Returning home, the council officials forgive them. The novel ends with Sunny, Chichi, and Sasha attending the Zuma Rock Festival.
