Survivor: The Australian Outback

Survivor: The Australian Outback, also known simply as Survivor: Australia, was the second season of the American reality competition series. It aired on CBS from January 28 to May 23, 2001. The season was filmed from October 23 to December 3, 2000, at Goshen cattle station along the Herbert River in northern Queensland. Jeff Probst hosted, and 16 contestants competed over 42 days—one of only two seasons to last longer than the standard 39 days, alongside Survivor: Thailand. Tina Wesson won the title of Sole Survivor, defeating Colby Donaldson by a 4–3 jury vote and taking home US$1,000,000. She was also the first female winner in the show’s history.

The series was created by Mark Burnett and Charlie Parsons, based on the Swedish show *Expedition Robinson*. Contestants were isolated in a remote location, where they had to find their own food, water, and shelter. Every three days, one player was voted out by the group, with challenges offering rewards (such as food, living supplies, or a car) and immunity from elimination. The last player left won the million-dollar prize.

The cast of 16 was split into two tribes: Ogakor (the Kunjen word for “crocodile”) and Kucha (the Pakanha word for “kangaroo”). After several weeks, the remaining ten players merged into a single tribe called Barramundi, named after a local fish. The final seven eliminated contestants formed the jury that decided the winner.

Several contestants returned for later seasons. Tina Wesson, Colby Donaldson, Jerri Manthey, Alicia Calaway, and Amber Brkich all competed in *Survivor: All-Stars*. Donaldson and Manthey later appeared on *Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains*. Michael Skupin returned for *Survivor: Philippines*, and Wesson played again on *Survivor: Blood vs. Water* alongside her daughter Katie Collins, who had appeared via video chat in the original season. Jeff Varner and Kimmi Kappenberg returned for *Survivor: Cambodia*, and Varner made a third appearance on *Survivor: Game Changers*. Amber Brkich (now Mariano) competed again on *Survivor: Winners at War*. Donaldson also appeared on *Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans*. Outside *Survivor*, Brkich and her fiancé Rob Mariano competed on *The Amazing Race 7* and later *The Amazing Race 11*. Varner and Calaway appeared on *Big Brother 2*.

The season was well received by critics.
