History
Kerretta came together in mid-2005, pulling in H.Walker from Avotor, William Waters from Meterman, and David Holmes, who had been producing albums for Jakob and An Emerald City. Their debut was a 7-inch single, "Death in the Future/Wisnierska," put out by Midium Records in December 2007, after a series of New Zealand shows sparked strong interest from college radio. In early 2008, they cut a four-track 12-inch EP called "Antient" with Dale Cotton in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, then started opening for American acts like The Breeders and Trail of Dead, and played festivals including Big Day Out.
Their first full-length, the self-produced "Vilayer," came out in 2009 on Germany's Golden Antenna label and earned a nomination for the Taite Music Prize in 2010. That same year, Kerretta toured North America, hitting South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, and sharing bills with Pierced Arrows, Lullabye Arkestra, and Narrows. They recorded their second LP, "Saansilo," in March 2011 and released it that September. Between 2011 and 2014, the band gave away the track "The Guardsmen" as a free download in 2013, and drummer H.Walker put out the record "Knowing" with Jakob's Jeff Boyle under the name Mean in 2012.
After three European tours supporting "Saansilo," their third album "Pirohia" arrived in 2014 on Golden Antenna. They later assembled "Exiscens," a collection of out-takes, digital singles, reworks, and unreleased material from 2007 to 2018. In 2024, Kerretta issued their fourth studio album, "Angelm," through A Thousand Arms in North America and Dunk! Records in Europe.
