Lore & Background

The tour was confirmed in October 2025, and meant a restructuring of the Rugby Championship, which was axed for 2026 and 2030. Alongside the New Zealand tour will be a South Africa women vs. New Zealand women match at FNB Stadium on 5 September, ahead of the third test. It is the first time in the pair's history that the Freedom Cup has been contested over four tests.

In Their Own Story

The floodlights hummed over Eden Park, casting long shadows across the dewy grass. It was late autumn, and the air bit with a chill that only Auckland fans knew how to endure. The crowd roared, a sea of black jerseys pressing against the rails. On the touchline, the Canterbury captain tightened his boots, eyes fixed on the opposition lineout. This wasn't just another match; it was a statement. As the referee blew the whistle, the silence broke into chaos. A tackle landed with earth-shaking force, mud flying from the cleats. In that moment, under the New Zealand sky, history was being written not by the All Blacks abroad, but by these two giants at home.

Reader's Guide

The tour includes four test matches between South Africa and New Zealand, with venues including Ellis Park Stadium, FNB Stadium, Cape Town Stadium, Kings Park Stadium, and Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Two of the four tests are to be played in Johannesburg, with one in Cape Town. A fourth test is at a neutral venue, confirmed in January 2026 as M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The tour also features mid-week matches against the four South African United Rugby Championship provincial teams (Bulls, Lions, Sharks, Stormers) and a fixture against South Africa A.
