History

Lowell first appeared in organized baseball back in 1877, when the city fielded two teams: one in the League Alliance and another called the Lowell Ladies Men in the New England Association. The city was a regular member of the Class B New England League over the years, but it hadn't hosted a minor league team since 1947, when the Lawrence Millionaires moved to Lowell partway through the season. The modern team arrived in 1996, brought by Clyde Smoll Jr., who had bought the Elmira franchise in 1986 and was the son of a former major league pitcher. Drew Weber owned the Spinners from 1997 until June 2016, when Dave Heller bought the club. In 2000, the Spinners set a minor league record by selling out every home game, starting a streak of 413 consecutive sellouts that finally ended on August 30, 2010. On August 21, 2003, the team gave away a bobblehead of Jack Kerouac, a Lowell native who played football at Lowell High School. The bobblehead was accepted into Cooperstown in 2005, the first literary figure to be honored there, and raised $10,000 for the Jack Kerouac Scholarship Fund. The promotion was repeated on August 7, 2012, to coincide with the film release of On the Road, featuring a bobblehead with both a bobble head and a bobble arm. A third Kerouac bobblehead, showing him in his Lowell High football uniform, was given away on July 25, 2013.
