The bus pulls into the Coliseum lot at 6:40 on a Tuesday in February, 1981. The sky is the flat grey of Long Island winter, and the parking lot is a sea of station wagons and pickup trucks, their tailgates down, coolers stacked. A kid in a too-big number-9 jersey — the one nobody on the roster wears yet, the one his dad bought at the team shop in '79 — presses his face to the bus window and watches the concrete bowl swallow the last of the daylight. Inside, the ice is already being resurfaced, the Zamboni's hiss a low hum under the PA system. The smell hits first: cold air, rubber, the faint sweetness of the concession stands warming up. A woman two rows back is knitting a scarf in blue and orange, humming something. The kid says nothing. He doesn't need to. Everyone on the bus knows what they're here for, and the Island knows, and that's enough.
