Playing career
Thomas Hickey started his major junior career with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL, playing only five games in 2004–05. The next season, as a rookie, he put up 28 points. In his draft year, 2006–07, he bumped his totals to 9 goals and 50 points. That summer, the Los Angeles Kings made him the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NHL entry draft. He signed a three-year entry-level deal on July 17, 2007, but after training camp the Kings sent him back to Seattle for a third junior season. An ankle injury during the 2008–09 season required surgery after it ended. Then in November 2009, a shoulder injury also needed surgery and kept him out until April 1, 2010. Just before the Monarchs’ 2009–10 playoffs, he sprained his ankle and couldn’t return until the semi-finals, where the Monarchs lost to the Hershey Bears. While with the Monarchs, he served as an alternate captain. On January 15, 2013, the New York Islanders claimed Hickey off waivers from the Kings. He joined their training camp and made his NHL debut on January 27, 2013, against the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre. On February 21, 2013, he scored his first NHL goal—an overtime winner against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. In the 2015–16 season, he scored another overtime winner against the Washington Capitals, clinching a playoff spot for the Islanders. Two weeks later, he netted his first playoff goal in Game 3, again in overtime, off a pass from Brock Nelson to give the Islanders a 2–1 series lead over the Florida Panthers. On July 1, 2018, he signed a four-year contract with the Islanders. Before the 2019–20 season, after losing his roster spot to injury and Devon Toews’ emergence, and with the Islanders needing room for Noah Dobson, Hickey was waived and sent to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Though he played only 14 games there, the Islanders nominated him for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy following the death of his older brother, Dan.
International play
During his third year of major junior, Hickey represented Canada at the 2008 World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic, helping the team win a fourth consecutive gold medal. The following year, he was selected as captain for the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa, returning with John Tavares, P. K. Subban and Zach Boychuk. In the third preliminary game, he was named Canada's player of the game in a 5–1 win against Germany. Canada defeated Sweden in the finals for its fifth straight WJHC gold medal.
Broadcasting career
Hickey ended his 12-year pro playing career by joining the MSG Network's Islanders broadcast team on October 27, 2022, effectively announcing his retirement. Rogers Communications announced in April 2024 that it would move Monday night games in Canada from its NHL on Sportsnet to Amazon Prime Video. Hickey was named in September 2024 as an analyst and interviewer for Prime Monday Night Hockey, providing between-the-benches reports starting with the October 14, 2024 game in Montreal. He also remains part of the MSG broadcast team for Islanders games.
