Lore & Background

Stevens was born in Kitchener, Ontario, and played youth hockey in the 1976 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He was drafted ninth overall by the Kitchener Rangers in the 1981 OHL draft and helped the team win the Memorial Cup in 1982. He was selected fifth overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1982 NHL entry draft and made the NHL at age 18, never playing in the minors. He scored on his first shot in his first NHL game and made the All-Rookie Team. Stevens finished third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting and was named Capitals Rookie of the Year. He later captained the Devils to four Stanley Cup Final appearances in nine years, winning three championships, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2000. He was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in 2017.

Reader's Guide

Stevens retired with the most games played by an NHL defenseman (1,635 games), a record later passed by Chris Chelios and Zdeno Chara. He was the youngest player to reach 1,500 games, doing so at age 37 years, 346 days. He never had a negative plus/minus in any of his 22 NHL seasons and had the most penalty minutes of any Hall of Fame player until Chris Chelios was inducted in 2013. He never won the James Norris Memorial Trophy.
