Super Bowl XXXI was played on January 26, 1997, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans between the AFC champion New England Patriots and the NFC champion Green Bay Packers for the 1996 NFL title. The Packers won 35–21; it was the last of 13 straight Super Bowl victories by the NFC over the AFC.

Background
The Patriots' rise began in 1993, when Bill Parcells was hired as head coach and the team drafted quarterback Drew Bledsoe. New England reached the game after an 11–5 regular season, its second Super Bowl appearance and the first of eleven under owner Robert Kraft. The teams combined for 24 first-quarter points, the most in Super Bowl history, and Packers return specialist Desmond Howard was named MVP.
