History

In late 2001, the New England Collegiate Baseball League first reached out to Sanford about fielding a team. Marcel Blouin, the town’s former parks and recreation director, met with officials and suggested Goodall Park as the venue. Startup money came from local businessmen Allen Mapes, Ron Woodward, and Geoff Titherington, along with Neil Olson from Bethel, Maine, who had worked with the former NECBL team the Lowell All-Americans. The following year, Bob Hardison, Bob Gonyou, Joe Vitko, Gary Miller, and Curtis Jacks joined the management. Eventually, the Mainers’ owners decided the team should be run by its shareholders, transitioning it into a non-profit run by volunteers from Sanford-Springvale and nearby towns.

Media

Mainers games are broadcast on the NECBL Broadcast Network through BlueFrame Technology, and locally on 104.3 FM and AM 1220 The Legends WWSF. Until the 2012 season, only the NECBL Broadcast Network carried the games; in March 2012 the radio station announced plans to also broadcast away games. In 2024, the Mainers were one of three NECBL pilot broadcast sites for ESPN+, with ten games airing exclusively on that platform.
