Premise

Set in the 1990s in the gritty Tetuán district of Madrid, the series follows Miguel, a promising journalist living with his lawyer girlfriend Cris in central Madrid. After his father is ruined by a fraud, Miguel returns to his working-class neighborhood and becomes a criminal to save his family. He reunites with childhood friend Sastre, a lowkey criminal, and they embark on a series of robberies. Their plans are threatened by Carol, girlfriend of the dangerous crime boss El Chatarrero.

Production and release

Atresmedia's Antena 3 announced plans to adapt Miguel Sáez Carral's novel Apaches in May 2014. The series was produced by New Atlantis, with the screenplay written by Sáez Carral, Carlos Montero, and María López Castaño. Daniel Calparsoro, Alberto Ruiz Rojo, and Miguel Ángel Vivas co-directed the 12 episodes. Shooting took place in Guadalajara's Fuerte de San Francisco housing area and in Madrid's Fuencarral and Villaverde districts. The pilot was pre-screened in 2015, but Atresmedia shelved the series. An agreement with Netflix led to a global release on 8 September 2017. The first episode aired on Antena 3 on 8 January 2018, and the free-to-air run concluded on 26 March 2018.
