Background

Bayona announced in June 2023 that Michael Giacchino would compose the score for Society of the Snow, following their earlier work together on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It was Giacchino's first Spanish film; Bayona felt his music gave the Andes odyssey a special voice and energy. Giacchino called Society of the Snow the most emotional film he had worked on, surpassing even Pixar's Up, because of the dread, isolation and helplessness of the survivors. He told GoldDerby that putting himself in the shoes of real people who survived the ordeal was wholly different from doing so for fictional characters. He met with two survivors to study their experiences, believing that was the only way to find the truth of what the music should do. The score is at times bleak and melancholic. Giacchino declined to use puns in track titles, a trademark of his earlier work. He employed a vocal choir singing in Mapuche, an indigenous language of the Andes, which he felt was the voice of those who did not return. The score was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London with a minimal orchestra and no brass, reflecting the characters' religious upbringings. The first track, Found, was released on 8 September 2023, the day before the film's premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. The second track, Andres Ascent, came out on 10 November. Netflix Music released the full score on 4 January 2024.

Reception

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Giacchino's hard-working, forceful orchestral score could only do so much to keep the momentum humming. Guy Lodge of Variety described it as a typically maximalist score with frantic percussion and a keening choir alongside ample strings. Amon Warmann of Empire noted that the score alternates between haunting horror chords and moving melodies. Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood called it a stirring musical score. James Southall of Movie Wave wrote that Society of the Snow is what great film music should be, accentuating lows and highs while treating real-life horrors with respect. Jonathan Broxton described it as subtle and one of the most understated scores of Giacchino's career.
