History
Providence began its ice hockey program in 1927 with a 6–4 win over Springfield. The inaugural season ended with seven straight losses, using three coaches, and the program was shuttered until 1952 due to a lack of available ice. Upon returning, the Friars played at the Rhode Island Auditorium with Providence native Dick Rondeau as coach. Rondeau produced a winning season in his third year, the same season the Friars joined their first conference, the NEHL. When ECAC Hockey formed in 1961, Providence was selected as one of eight teams for the first conference tournament despite a 14th-place finish. The Friars won their first conference title in 1964 and followed with the Conference Championship, earning their first national tournament appearance, where they lost both games to finish 4th.
