History

Miami University added hockey as a varsity sport in 1978 under first coach Steve Cady, playing at Goggin Ice Arena. The team competed as an independent Division I program for its first two seasons, compiling a 45–27–3 overall record. Miami joined the CCHA for the 1980–81 season. Goaltender Alain Chevrier, who played for Miami from 1980 to 1984, became the first Miamian to appear in the NHL, debuting with the New Jersey Devils in 1985; left-wing Craig Fisher followed in 1990 with the Philadelphia Flyers after two seasons at Miami, and Fisher was also the program's first first-team All-CCHA selection, for the 1989–90 season. The program's first sustained success came in 1992–93, when the team posted a 22-3-5 record and won the CCHA regular season title. Under third head coach George Gwozdecky, Miami received its first NCAA tournament bid that season, led by Chris Bergeron (61 points), Brian Savage (2nd-Team All-American, 37 goals), defenseman Bobby Marshall (2nd-Team All-American, 45 points), and goalie Richard Shulmistra (2.71 GAA). The RedHawks lost 3–1 to Wisconsin in the first round at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. In 1994–95, goaltender Chuck Thuss became the program's first first-team All-American after spending three seasons as a backup without playing a minute; in his senior season he recorded 16 wins and a 2.87 GAA over 1983 minutes, and received the CCHA's Terry Flanagan Memorial Award for perseverance and courage. Miami lost 4–2 to Cornell in the regional quarterfinals at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
