Background
The show begins when Aaron Miller’s eldest son, Noah, leaves the Amish community, though Aaron stays in contact with him through a post office box. After learning Noah died in a surfing accident, Aaron travels to California for the funeral. There he discovers Noah had been living with Susanna Lo Verde, a vineyard owner who is pregnant with Noah’s child. Aaron returns to Pennsylvania to think things over.
Soon a relative of Susanna’s arrives on a motorcycle and explains her troubles. Aaron then tells his wife—who had been surprised he kept in touch with Noah—that they must go help her. The family arrives, much to Susanna’s surprise, and begins assisting while adjusting to unfamiliar society and technology. The three Miller children are enrolled in public school.
Later episodes of this short-lived series focus on the ongoing clash, and occasional harmony, between the Millers and their worldly neighbors. Aaron’s commitment to integrity and justice influences a few dishonest people to change their ways.
