Mammoth Cave National Park, situated in south-central Kentucky, protects the world’s longest known cave system, formally called the Mammoth–Flint Ridge Cave System since a 1972 connection was discovered. As of 2025, surveyed passageways exceed 1.5 times the length of the second-longest system, Mexico’s Ox Bel Ha. The park was established on July 1, 1941, following contentious eminent domain proceedings, and later designated a World Heritage Site in 1981, a Biosphere Reserve in 1990, and an International Dark Sky Park in 2021. The cave system formed roughly 330 million years ago in Mississippian-era limestone, dolomite, siltstone, and shale, capped by stable Big Clifty Sandstone. This sandstone cap makes many upper passages very dry, lacking stalactites or stalagmites. Water dissolves limestone through vertical cracks, creating an epikarstic zone that feeds high-elevation springs. The main human-explorable caves lie in the Girkin Formation, Ste. Genevieve Limestone, and St. Louis Limestone. Notable features include the Frozen Niagara room and Cedar Sink, a massive sinkhole where a river disappears underground. The Green River and its tributary, the Nolin River, flow through the park. Visitors can choose from electric-lit tours ranging one to six hours, paraffin-lamp tours, or “wild” tours through muddy crawls. The famous Echo River boat tour ended in the early 1990s. Human activity in the caves dates back at least five thousand years, evidenced by Native American remains and intentional burials. The park’s visitor center is on Mammoth Cave Parkway, accessible from Interstate 65.

The cave system developed roughly 330 million years ago in thick limestone strata, capped by a resistant sandstone layer that has kept many upper passages remarkably dry and free of stalactites and stalagmites. Below the sandstone caprock lie the Girkin Formation, Ste. Genevieve Limestone, and St. Louis Limestone, in which human-explorable passages have formed. Water began dissolving the Girkin stone about 10 million years ago, while the upper cave areas formed around 3.2 million years ago. The sandstone cap has been eroded in places, such as the Frozen Niagara room, where limestone is exposed. At Cedar Sink, a massive sinkhole in the park’s southern region, a small river disappears underground. The park’s boundaries lie primarily in Edmonson County, with small extensions into Hart and Barren counties.
