April 1998 saw the founding of this organization through the merger of the National Parks Authority and the Nature Reserves Authority, which had separately administered these sites from 1964 onward.[1] Raya Shurki holds the position of director for the Authority.[1]
Geography and history
The Authority's symbol is the ibex, a mountain goat similar to the antelope.[1] The Authority has led significant efforts to protect the endangered griffon vulture population through the "Under Our Wing" project.[2] This project focuses on breeding vultures in captivity and releasing them into the wild.[2] After the 2010 Carmel Forest fire, the Authority and Jewish National Fund launched large-scale reforestation efforts.[3]
Enforcing Israeli wildlife protection laws constitutes one of the Authority's responsibilities.[1] In 2007, the number of national parks under the Authority's management was 69, and it oversaw 190 nature reserves.[4] To protect vultures from consuming poisoned carcasses, feeding stations are established by the Authority.[5] Planting indigenous tree species, constructing firebreaks, and removing debris were among the actions taken.[3]
Thousands of trees were replanted with assistance from volunteers both within Israel and from other nations.[3]
What the cited sources add
The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel has criticized the Authority's policies, claiming they harmed nature reserves and animals.[6] In 2007, scientists and conservation organizations opposed extending CEO Eli Amitay's appointment for a second term.[7] In October 2017, the Authority faced public criticism when instructional material at Avshalom Cave lacked an age estimate, which a guide claimed was due to pressure by the ultra-Orthodox population.[8] Consequently, Amitay's retirement occurred one year ahead of its original schedule.[9]
Shaul Goldstein was selected as CEO by a government committee in December of that same year.[9]
