Lore & Background
Brendan Witt's arrival in Nashville came after a long trade request. In August 2005, Witt asked the Capitals management to be traded to a team with a better chance of competing for the Stanley Cup. Re-signed by the Capitals despite his request, he remained in Washington to start the 2005–06 season. His wish was finally granted on March 9, 2006, when the Capitals sent him to the Nashville Predators for Kris Beech and a first-round draft pick. Witt joined a Predators squad pushing for the playoffs, adding veteran physicality and shot-blocking to their defense. Though his stay was short—just a handful of regular-season games and a playoff run—Witt's reputation as a punishing defender preceded him. He had led the NHL in hits during the 2000–01 season with 322, and he brought that same relentless edge to Nashville. After the season, Witt became an unrestricted free agent and signed with the New York Islanders on July 3, 2006, ending his brief but impactful tenure with the Predators.
