Philippe Myers
Canadian defenceman who played for four NHL teams.
Last updated
Philippe Myers is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who currently plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). He began his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers as an undrafted free agent and later played for the Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning before joining the Maple Leafs. Myers represented Canada at the World Junior Championships and the World Championships, earning silver medals at both tournaments.
Lore & Background
Myers was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, and raised in Dieppe, New Brunswick, as the only child of Dave and Suzanne Myers. He attended Francophone school and became comfortable in both French and English. He played minor hockey with the Moncton Flyers midget AAA league before being selected by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the fourth round of the 2013 QMJHL entry draft.
After signing with the Philadelphia Flyers as an undrafted free agent in 2015, he made his NHL debut in 2019 and scored his first goal later that season. During the 2019–20 season, he became a regular on the Flyers' blue line, playing on the second defensive pairing with Travis Sanheim and posting a plus-minus of +16 before fracturing his right patella. He recovered in time for the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, playing all 16 games and scoring an overtime game-winning goal against the New York Islanders. In 2021, he was traded to the Nashville Predators as part of a deal involving Ryan Ellis.
After a limited role with Nashville, he was placed on waivers and later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 2022, then loaned to the Toronto Marlies. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2022 and signed a one-year extension. As a free agent, he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Maple Leafs in July 2024 and played his first game with the team in October 2024.
Reader's Guide
Philippe Myers' career illustrates the path of an undrafted player who rose to NHL prominence through strong junior play and a standout rookie season. His signing by the Flyers in 2015 was notable because scouts believed he would have been a first-round pick in the 2016 draft had he not been signed. His rookie season in 2019–20 was marked by a plus-minus of +16, tied for best among NHL rookies, and a key role on the Flyers' second defensive pairing. His overtime game-winning goal in the 2020 playoffs against the Islanders highlighted his ability to perform under pressure.
However, his subsequent seasons were affected by injuries and inconsistent playing time, including a fractured rib early in the 2020–21 season and struggles to regain form. His trade to the Predators in 2021 was part of a larger roster revamp, but he played only three of the first 11 games and was eventually placed on waivers. His journey through multiple teams—Philadelphia, Nashville, Tampa Bay, and Toronto—reflects the volatility of a defenseman's career in the NHL, where performance, injuries, and team needs can rapidly alter a player's trajectory. His international experience includes silver medals at the 2017 World Junior Championships and the 2019 World Championships, adding to his professional resume.
