Playing career

Santini began his high school years at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, New York, then moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to join the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. As a youth, he played in the 2008 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the New York Rangers minor ice hockey team. Rated a top prospect projected as a first-round selection for the 2013 NHL entry draft, he trained with the NTDP from 2011 to 2013 and won a silver medal at the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championships, where he was named the tournament's best defenseman. In his first season at Boston College, Santini became a top-four defenseman known as a hard-hitting, shut-down player, recording 3 goals and 11 points and earning a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie team; he also played at the 2014 World Juniors for the United States. His sophomore year began with him paired with freshman Noah Hanifin as the top two defensemen, but after four games he was sidelined by a wrist injury, underwent surgery, missed 16 games, and returned after the New Year's break. As a junior, he scored one goal and 19 assists, helping Boston College reach the Frozen Four, where they lost to Quinnipiac. Santini signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils on April 9, 2016, and played his first NHL game that night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He recorded his first NHL point in a 3-0 win over the Boston Bruins on January 2, 2017, and scored his first NHL goal on January 12, 2017, when a puck deflected off his elbow in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers. As a restricted free agent, he signed a three-year, $4.25 million contract with the Devils on August 14, 2018. On June 22, 2019, the Devils traded Santini, prospect Jérémy Davies, and draft picks to the Nashville Predators for P. K. Subban. In the 2019-20 season, Santini appeared in only two games for the Predators, spending most of the campaign with their AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals.
