The first season of Narcos: Mexico premiered on Netflix on 16 November 2018. The series, created by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro, was first planned as the fourth season of Narcos but became a companion series about the origins of Mexico's drug trade.

It dramatises the creation and rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s, as Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo (Diego Luna) unites several plazas, or territories, into one empire at a time when traffickers were a loose confederation of small marijuana growers and dealers. DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Pena) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara for a new post that proves far harder than he expected.
