Professional career
Marco Spissu went on loan to Virtus Bologna in Italy's Serie A2 in July 2016. While there, he helped the team win the Italian LNP Cup and earned the tournament's Finals MVP award. After spending eleven seasons with Dinamo Sassari starting in 2011, he moved to Spain in 2021 on a two-year deal with Unicaja Málaga. That contract was canceled on August 12, 2021, after Spissu failed his physicals.
The Italian Basketball Federation backed him, pointing out that his health was fine and no injuries had affected his condition, since he had been selected for the Tokyo Olympics. According to the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Málaga's management had doubts about the agreement and used his physical status as a reason to back out. On August 19, 2021, Spissu joined UNICS Kazan, a Russian club competing in the VTB United League and newly promoted to the EuroLeague.
He left that team early in 2022 because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On July 20, 2022, he signed with Reyer Venezia Mestre in Italy's top league, the LBA. On June 21, 2024, he moved back to Spain, signing with Casademont Zaragoza of the Liga ACB. Two years later, on June 25, 2026, he returned to Italy, signing with Guerri Napoli in the LBA.
