Neon Genesis Evangelion (manga)
Manga companion to the anime, with distinct plot and character differences.
The manga adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion was created as a promotional tie-in for the anime series, not as the original story.[1] Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the anime's character designer, wrote and drew the manga entirely on his own without consulting anyone.[1][2] The plot follows Shinji Ikari piloting the Evangelion mecha against Angels, but includes many small differences from the anime such as Toji Suzuhara's death and the omission of five Angels.[3]

Making and release
The anime rapidly outpaced the manga, and chapters for volume 4 were not released until over a year after the TV series finished airing.[4] The manga resumed in the April 2011 issue of Young Ace on April 4, 2011.[5][6] A meeting between Hideaki Anno and King Records led to the creation of the manga, which debuted in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Ace on December 26, 1994, ahead of the anime due to production hold-ups.[7] Sadamoto's work on the manga was released at an uneven pace because he balanced it with other commitments, with a new volume appearing approximately every eighteen months.[8][9]
What the cited sources add
He explained that manga is drawn by only one person and cannot fit the great load of content, so even after abbreviating it could take years to tell the same story.[10] In a 2016 interview, Sadamoto confirmed he did not consult anyone on the manga and that no one from the TV series' staff intervened.[2] He added that the bonus chapter featuring Mari from the Rebuild films is not part of the storyline but an extra chapter he added on impulse.[2] The manga was moved to Young Ace magazine in July 2009, as announced by a flyer packed in other Evangelion manga volumes.[11]
Kadokawa Shoten announced the 13th volume for November 2, 2012, but neither Sadamoto nor Kadokawa confirmed it was the final volume at that time.[12]
