Goin' Downtown

A point-and-click adventure set in a late 21st-century New York.

Goin' Downtown

Goin' Downtown is a point-and-click adventure for Windows, released on May 22, 2008. It was created by Silver Style Entertainment, with English publishing handled by The Games Company and Kalypso Media. Critical reception was mixed: reviewers liked the game's setting and visuals, but found the story underdeveloped, the puzzles too simple, and the overall experience too short.

The gameplay follows a traditional point-and-click format. One mouse button moves the protagonist through the world, while the other interacts with objects and characters. Most challenges are inventory-based puzzles, though the game also includes dialogue puzzles and a brief stealth sequence.

Set in a late 21st-century New York City, the story follows police officer Jake McCorly. Still grieving his wife's death, he investigates a case involving missing prostitutes. After rescuing one woman, she vanishes under strange circumstances.

The game's original publisher, The Games Company, filed for insolvency in 2010, after the English localization had already been released by Kalypso Media in 2009. Kalypso Media localized the game and produced an English voice dub.

Adventure Gamers gave it 3 out of 5 stars, calling the sci-fi setting "convincing" and the graphics "lovely," but faulting the plot's lack of development, the easy puzzles, and the absence of English voice acting. GameStar scored it 79 out of 100, praising the setting and adult themes while noting the unsympathetic main character and some illogical elements. Igromania rated it 7 out of 10, criticizing the poor Russian localization.

Lore & Background

The game is a traditional point-and-click adventure that lets one mouse button move the main character within the world and the other interact with items and people. Most of the obstacles are inventory-based puzzles, but at various times there are also dialogue puzzles and a 'faux stealth section'.

Reader's Guide

Goin' Downtown is notable as a late-era point-and-click adventure game that attempted to blend a sci-fi setting with adult themes. Its development was complicated by the bankruptcy of its original publisher, The Games Company, before English localization could be completed. Kalypso Media acquired the rights and localized the text but did not dub the game into English, a point criticized by reviewers. The game's reception was mixed: Adventure Gamers rated it 3/5 stars, praising its 'convincing' sci-fi setting and 'lovely' graphics but faulting the plot development and simplistic puzzles. GameStar gave it 79/100, commending the setting and adult themes while noting an unsympathetic main character and illogical aspects. Igromania rated it 7/10, criticizing the Russian localization. The game's significance lies in its representation of the challenges faced by smaller adventure game studios and publishers in the late 2000s, as well as its attempt to address mature subject matter within the genre.
