Escape Dead Island

A spin-off survival mystery with cel-shaded graphics and psychological horror.

Last updated

Escape Dead Island is a third-person action game set in the same universe as the Dead Island series.[1]

Making and release

Escape Dead Island was developed by Fatshark.[2] The game stars Cliff Calo, a privileged man investigating rumors of a zombie-infested island.[1] Cliff's quest involves proving something to his media mogul father.[1] The game presents a third-person perspective, unlike the first-person view of previous Dead Island titles.[1]

Escape Dead Island lacks many franchise trademarks like loads of loot and handmade weapons.[1] The game provides a pistol and shotgun with ammo that is not scarce.[1] Stealth options include sneaking up behind zombies and stabbing them with a screwdriver.[1] The game includes a "shove" move to push zombies off ledges.[1]

The final hours force the player into closed arenas with multiple zombies.[1]

What the cited sources add

Tim Turi of Game Informer gave the game a 2/10, criticizing the frustrating mission structure and poor textures.[3] Turi described the plot as having all the fun of a so-bad-it's-bad '80s horror flick.[2] Justin McElroy from Polygon declared it "the worst game I've ever finished"[4] McElroy wrote that the game fails as a stealth game, survival horror game, and action game.[1]

McElroy noted that the game's zombies cannot even gravity, as they do not fall off ledges.[1]
