Lore & Background

The game follows Torneko, a weapon merchant for hire, who lives in Lakanaba with his wife Tessie and son Tipper. He already owns a shop there and journeys to expand it. Hearing rumors of a treasure in a mysterious dungeon near Lakanaba, Torneko sets out to explore it. After obtaining permission from the King by retrieving a treasure box from the Small Mystery Dungeon, Torneko explores the Mystery Dungeon repeatedly, selling items to expand his store. He ultimately retrieves the Box of Happiness, a music box that brings joy to his family and village.

Reader's Guide

Torneko's Great Adventure is significant as the first game in the Mystery Dungeon series, which has produced over thirty titles including five Dragon Quest spin-offs. It adapted the roguelike genre from the 1980s game Rogue, making it more accessible with features like a hunger system, earthquake mechanics to prevent stalling, a translucent map, and music. The game sold over 800,000 copies, leading Chunsoft to turn it into a franchise with a sequel, Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer, in 1995. It was released only in Japan in 1993, though an English version was planned but never released; a PAL prototype from Germany was later discovered. A remake titled Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- received a worldwide release in 2026, 33 years after the original.
