Frédéric Dard

Frédéric Dard, who also wrote under the pen name San-Antonio, was a French author who became the world’s best-selling writer in the French language during his lifetime. He was known for blending crime fiction with humor, often using a farcical tone in his most successful works, though he also produced serious fiction. Dard’s writing was distinguished by his raunchy comedy and inventive manipulation of French slang. Born into a working-class family in Bourgoin-Jallieu, he grew up in Saint-Chef and Lyon, raised largely by his grandmother due to his parents’ financial struggles and his father’s alcoholism. A congenital shoulder deformity and a disabled left arm caused him lifelong discomfort and childhood bullying, which he constantly tried to conceal. Encouraged by his grandmother, he began writing stories as a child, and his first published piece, a short story, appeared in a children’s magazine. After meeting author Marcel E. Grancher as a teenager, Dard obtained his first job as a journalist. His first novel came out in 1940, the same year he won a literary prize. To advance his career, he moved to the Paris region in 1948, taking on various writing assignments. In 1949, he wrote the crime novel that became the first volume of his San-Antonio series, naming the hero after a Texas city he found on a map. The book sold poorly but caught the attention of a publisher who signed him. Over the 1950s, Dard’s crime novels grew increasingly popular, making him France’s most-read author. He wrote up to five books annually for his publisher, using San-Antonio as both a pen name and the series title, written as the hero’s first-person memoirs. The fact that Dard and San-Antonio were the same person was kept secret for years. The series eventually included 175 adventures and nine special volumes, with total book sales estimated at around 250 million copies. Dard also wrote over 30 plays, radio dramas, and several screenplays, directing one film in 1960. While his serious crime fiction earned him a major prize in 1957, the San-Antonio novels evolved from detective stories into extravagant satire and parody.
