Zero Time Dilemma
Third entry in the Zero Escape series, set between the first two games.
Zero Time Dilemma (also released as Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma) is an adventure game from developer Chime and publishers Spike Chunsoft and Aksys Games. It serves as the third installment in the Zero Escape series, coming after *Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors* (2009) and *Virtue's Last Reward* (2012). The title launched in 2016 on Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and Windows, followed by a PlayStation 4 version in 2017 and an Xbox One release in 2022.
The story takes place between the events of the two earlier games. Nine people are abducted by a masked figure called Zero, split into three teams, and forced into a lethal contest known as the "Decision Game." Players control three of these characters, moving through chapters that mix animated cinematics, escape-the-room puzzles, and moral choices. Each chapter covers a 90-minute block, and players can tackle them in any order.
Series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi handled both direction and writing. Shinji Hosoe composed the music, and Rui Tomono designed the characters. Uchikoshi began plotting the story in 2012, but development stalled after the series underperformed commercially in Japan. In 2015, work resumed following strong fan demand. Critics received the game positively.
**Gameplay**
The game is built from multiple chapters, each representing a 90-minute span. These chapters mix narrative sequences with escape-the-room puzzles. Players select chapters—called "fragments"—via the Floating Fragment system, choosing based on an image and a short description. Fragments can be played out of order; characters lose their memory after each 90-minute period, leaving them unaware of their place in the timeline. Completing a fragment returns the player to the Floating Fragment screen, and the finished fragment appears on a narrative flowchart showing its position in the story.
Narrative sections are presented as 3D animated cinematics with camera movement and full voice acting in both Japanese and English. The escape sections, which include thirteen distinct rooms, require players to search for tools and clues using a first-person point-and-click interface, then solve puzzles. These puzzles are mostly self-contained, testing problem-solving and memory—for example, deciphering messages or aligning the sides of a 3D object.
After finishing an escape section, players must make a moral decision. One such sce

Lore & Background
Zero Time Dilemma is set between the events of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward. The story follows nine people kidnapped by a masked person known as Zero, divided into three teams (C-Team, Q-Team, D-Team), and forced to play a death game called the Decision Game. The player takes the roles of three characters, playing through chapters called fragments that represent 90-minute periods; these can be played out of order. The game features animated cinematics, escape-the-room puzzles, and moral decisions.
The game was directed and written by series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi, with music by Shinji Hosoe and character designs by Rui Tomono. Uchikoshi began planning the story in 2012, but development was put on hiatus due to the commercial failure of the series in Japan. In 2015, development resumed in response to high demand from the series' fan base. The game was positively received by critics.
Reader's Guide
Zero Time Dilemma is significant as the concluding chapter of the Zero Escape trilogy, resolving narrative threads from the previous two games. Its nonlinear storytelling, using the Floating Fragment system and memory loss mechanics, allows players to experience the plot out of order, reinforcing the game's themes of multiple timelines and the many-worlds theory. The game's moral decisions, such as a choice involving a gun with a 50% chance of firing a live bullet, force players to confront ethical dilemmas. The game's development hiatus and subsequent revival due to fan demand highlight the series' dedicated fanbase. Its positive critical reception cemented the series' reputation for complex, branching narratives in adventure gaming. The game's lore, including the revelation of Zero's identity as Delta and the use of esper abilities, ties together the series' overarching story about time travel, shifting consciousness, and the Radical-6 virus.
