Flashbacks reveal the shared origin of six cutie marks.
"The Cutie Mark Chronicles" is the twenty-third episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic's first season. M.A. Larson wrote it, and supervising director Jayson Thiessen directed it. In the episode, the Cutie Mark Crusaders—Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle—try to discover how the older main characters got their cutie marks. As each older mare tells her story in flashback, they realize their destinies are connected.
The Crusaders set out to find Rainbow Dash, but along the way they hear the other ponies' tales. Applejack moved to Manehattan but hated the fancy life; a rainbow guided her back to Ponyville, where she earned her mark upon returning. Fluttershy, a clumsy pegasus bullied at flight camp, was saved by butterflies after falling from a cloud; a distant explosion helped her discover she could communicate with animals, earning her cutie mark. Rarity, unhappy with costumes she made for a school play, was pulled by her horn to a rock; an explosion split it open, revealing gems she used to improve the costumes, and she got her mark as the audience cheered. Twilight Sparkle, excited to enter Princess Celestia's school, failed a test to hatch an egg; an explosion startled her into unleashing wild magic that hatched the egg (revealing Spike), and Celestia offered to mentor her, pointing out her new cutie mark. Pinkie Pie lived on a dull rock farm; a rainbow cleared the clouds and curled her hair, making her so happy she threw a party in a silo, and her family joined in, earning her mark.
Finally, the Crusaders reach Rainbow Dash at Sugarcube Corner. She tells how, while racing bullies from Fluttershy's story, she performed her first Sonic Rainboom—a sonic boom with rainbow effects—winning the race and earning her cutie mark. The Rainboom also helped her friends earn theirs. Realizing this, the six ponies hug, feeling closer than they knew. Though Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle join the hug, Scootaloo dismisses the effort and suggests a new activity, but is pulled into the embrace.
Critics praised the episode. Emily VanDerWerff of The A.V. Club called it an example of the show's theme of children emulating teenagers who have their own problems, and noted its "surprisingly complex story" where flashbacks connect to reinforce destiny.
