The staff can remove cutie marks and replace them with identical equal-sign symbols, stripping ponies of their special talents. Starlight uses the staff to maintain her utopian control, claiming that cutie marks cause jealousy and conflict. The Mane Six are initially swayed by her rhetoric but soon realize the cost of losing their identities.

As the ponies resist, Starlight traps them and uses the staff to remove their cutie marks, forcing them to perform menial labor. However, the Mane Six's friendship and unique skills prove essential to escaping and restoring the villagers' cutie marks. The episode culminates in a confrontation where Starlight's own cutie mark is revealed to be a symbol of her past trauma—a friend leaving her due to a cutie mark—which she projects onto the entire town.
