Hearth's Warming Eve is the 26th episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic's second season. It debuted on The Hub on December 17, 2011, with a script by Merriwether Williams. In the episode, five of the Mane Six put on a holiday pageant recounting the founding of Equestria and the origins of the Hearth's Warming Eve celebration, while Twilight Sparkle serves as the narrator. It marks the first Hearth's Warming-themed episode of the fourth generation.
The pageant, staged at the Canterlot palace theater, shows the Mane Six acting out the story. Long ago, three pony tribes—earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns—kept a fragile peace based on necessity: earth ponies farmed, pegasi managed the weather, and unicorns controlled the sun and moon. This arrangement fell apart when a terrible winter storm caused food shortages. The tribal leaders—Princess Platinum (played by Rarity), Commander Hurricane (Rainbow Dash), and Chancellor Puddinghead (Pinkie Pie)—met to negotiate but quickly turned to accusations. Believing separation was the answer, each leader set out with a trusted advisor to find new land for their tribe alone. After traveling through harsh conditions, all three groups separately discovered what seemed like perfect territory: Commander Hurricane claimed mountains for "Pegasopolis," Princess Platinum staked out mineral-rich highlands for "Unicornia," and Chancellor Puddinghead selected fertile lowlands called "Earth." Their satisfaction turned to anger when they realized they had all chosen the same spot.
As the leaders resumed fighting, a mysterious blizzard forced them into a cave, where the arguments continued. Supernatural ice spirits called Windigos appeared, revealing themselves as the source of the endless winter—creatures that feed on hatred and discord between the tribes. The stubborn leaders froze solid from their own animosity, but their advisors realized that genuine friendship could break the curse. Their warming bond created a "Fire of Friendship" that banished the Windigos and melted the ice. With the storm over, the humbled tribes agreed to found a unified nation called Equestria, where all ponies could thrive together. The pageant ends with the Mane Six and the audience singing "The Heart Carol."
