"Friendship Is Magic" opens the animated series *My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic* as a two-part premiere, forming the first two episodes of season one. The story centers on Twilight Sparkle, a bookish and solitary unicorn, who is sent against her will by her teacher Princess Celestia to the town of Ponyville. There she encounters five ponies—Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie—and forms close bonds with them. Together, this group confronts Nightmare Moon, a villain freed after a millennium of lunar imprisonment, and defeats her using the Elements of Harmony, a set of magical artifacts.
The plot unfolds in two parts. In the first, Twilight learns of a prophecy foretelling Nightmare Moon's return during the Summer Sun Celebration. She warns Celestia, who dismisses the concern and orders Twilight to Ponyville to oversee celebration preparations and make friends. Twilight reluctantly meets the five ponies in charge: Applejack, a hardworking earth pony; Rainbow Dash, a bold pegasus; Rarity, a fashion-focused unicorn; Fluttershy, a timid pegasus who connects with animals; and Pinkie Pie, an energetic earth pony who loves parties. After getting acquainted, Twilight hopes to study the Nightmare Moon legend at her new home, the Golden Oak Library, but Pinkie Pie throws a welcome party that disrupts her plans. The next morning at the celebration, Celestia vanishes, and Nightmare Moon appears, declaring eternal night.
In the second part, Twilight and her new friends recall the Elements of Harmony, artifacts once used to defeat Nightmare Moon. A guidebook reveals five known elements—Honesty, Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, and Loyalty—with a sixth unknown, and states that when the five are present, a spark will reveal the sixth. Their last known location is the Castle of the Two Sisters in the Everfree Forest. The group ventures there, facing obstacles created by Nightmare Moon. Each pony helps overcome these challenges: Applejack’s honesty guides Twilight to trust her friends; Fluttershy removes a thorn from a manticore; Pinkie Pie turns frightening tree images into laughter; Rarity gives her tail to a sea serpent; and Rainbow Dash refuses an offer to lead the Shadowbolts out of loyalty. She tries to warn her mentor, Princess Celestia, the benevolent alicorn ruler of Equestria, but Celestia acknowledges the prophecy and sends Twilight and her baby dragon assistant Spike to Ponyville to supervise preparations for the celebration and make friends as part of a plan. Twilight reluctantly meets five ponies in charge of the preparations: Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie. After becoming acquainted with them, she looks forward to studying the legend of Nightmare Moon at her new home, the Golden Oak Library, but her plans are spoiled when Pinkie Pie throws a welcome party before she can even reach the library.
