Fluttershy overcomes stage fright in a lip-syncing scheme.
"Filli Vanilli" is the eightieth episode of *My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic* overall, and the fourteenth of its fourth season. Amy Keating Rogers wrote it, Jayson Thiessen directed it, and Jim Miller co-directed. The story follows Fluttershy as she copes with stage fright after her friends convince her to join a charity concert. The episode aired on The Hub on February 15, 2014, drawing 584,000 viewers.
In the plot, Fluttershy sings a morning tune for her animals, impressing her friends, who urge her to perform with the Pony Tones vocal quartet at a benefit. She declines due to her fear of the stage, despite being a fan of the group. At rehearsal, bass singer Big McIntosh loses his voice in a turkey call competition. Fluttershy visits shaman Zecora, who says she can cure Big Mac—but not in time. Zecora offers to recreate the Poison Joke effect that once gave Fluttershy a deep, masculine voice (dubbed "Flutterguy"). Still nervous, Fluttershy agrees to Rarity’s plan: she sings backstage while Big Mac lip-syncs on stage.
The concert succeeds, and demand for encores grows. Fluttershy enjoys singing from hiding and continues the arrangement. When Big Mac recovers, Rarity tells her she’s no longer needed. Seeing Fluttershy’s disappointment, the group lets her perform one last time. During the song, she accidentally knocks down the curtain, revealing herself. Though the audience cheers, she flees in embarrassment. Her friends find her at her cottage and convince her that facing her fear wasn’t as bad as she thought, since the audience loved her. Fluttershy agrees to sing privately for them and to join the band permanently once she fully overcomes her stage fright.
Writer Amy Keating Rogers pitched the idea in September 2012. The episode was initially called "The Return of Flutterguy," then changed to "Flutterfear" because the first title gave "too much information." It was finally named "Filli Vanilli," a nod to the German-French duo Milli Vanilli, who were caught lip-syncing.
Both songs were composed by series songwriter Daniel Ingram. "Music in the Treetops" was orchestrated by Trevor Hoffmann; "Find the Music in You" was orchestrated and arranged by Hoffmann and Caleb Chan.
A preview aired on *Entertainment Weekly* on February 14, 2014. The episode itself aired the next day on The Hub. Nielsen ratings showed it was watched by 0.3 percent of America
