In the episode, Pinkie Pie performs a musical number about making others smile, then encounters Cranky Doodle Donkey, who wants to be left alone. Despite his objections, Pinkie persists in trying to befriend him, leading to a series of mishaps: she covers him in cake batter, accidentally knocks off his toupée, and later destroys his scrapbook containing memories of a lost love. Cranky vows never to be her friend and kicks her out. Devastated, Pinkie seeks advice from Twilight, who suggests respecting his wishes, but Pinkie continues to pursue an apology. During a chase, Cranky reveals the scrapbook held memories of a female donkey he met at the Grand Galloping Gala. Pinkie finds that donkey, Matilda, who has been living in Ponyville all along, and reunites them. Cranky accepts Pinkie's apology and friendship.
