The stadium was built after disputes between the Cricket Club of India and the Mumbai Cricket Association over ticket allocations, becoming severe after the 1973 India-England Test. It was named after former BCCI President S. K. Wankhede in 1974, opened in time for the final Test between India and the West Indies in 1975, and hosted the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final where India defeated Sri Lanka.

The stadium is situated near Marine Drive in the Churchgate neighbourhood, near old cricket clubs including Hindu Gymkhana, Parsi Gymkhana and The Cricket Club of India. It has a capacity of 33,108 following renovations for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. The pitch is made of local red soil giving extra bounce, generally favouring batters, though it was criticized as a 'Minefield' during the 2004 Border Gavaskar Trophy.
