Yadav started playing club cricket in Mumbai before being selected for the Mumbai cricket team. He made his List A debut for Mumbai in February 2010, followed by his T20 and first-class debuts later that year. He captained Mumbai in domestic cricket for brief periods and was part of the Mumbai squad that won the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy.

Yadav made his T20I debut in March 2021 and his ODI debut in July 2021. He has played mainly limited-overs cricket for India, with his only Test match in February 2023. He was named captain of the Indian T20I team in November 2023 and re-appointed in July 2024. As of August 2024, he has scored over 3,000 international runs with four centuries, all in T20Is.
