Sharma was born on 30 April 1987 into a Marathi-Telugu family in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. He joined a cricket camp in 1999 and was coached by Dinesh Lad, who arranged a scholarship for him. He started as an off-spinner before Lad promoted him to open the innings. He made his List A debut for West Zone in March 2005 and his first-class debut for India A in July 2006. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006–07 season, scoring 205 against Gujarat. He made his Test debut in November 2013 against West Indies, scoring 177. He was appointed captain of India's Test team in February 2022. He retired from Test cricket on 7 May 2025.

His batting prowess was on full display during the 2019 World Cup, where he scored five centuries, including a match-winning 122 against South Africa and hundreds against Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This feat made him the first batsman to score five centuries in a single World Cup tournament, earning him the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2019.
