Ground effect in car design refers to a series of aerodynamic effects exploited to create downforce, particularly in racing cars, through underbody tunnels and floor design. The theory behind ground effect involves Bernoulli's principle: as air passes between the car's underside and the ground, the reduced cross-sectional area accelerates the air, lowering pressure and creating a net downward force. Viscosity also plays a role; the moving ground pulls air faster, enhancing the effect via Couette flow. This differs from the ground effect seen in aircraft at low altitudes.
American Jim Hall pioneered ground effect with his Chaparral cars, starting with a 1961 car that attempted a shaped underside but faced aerodynamic problems. His 1970 Chaparral 2J used fans and skirts to seal the cavity, and it won the 1970 Road America 200 before being banned later that year. In 1968, Argentine designer Heriberto Pronello developed the Pronello Huayra-Ford, tested in a wind tunnel at the Fábrica Militar de Aviones; later tests in 2023 at the Catesby tunnel confirmed its aerodynamic efficiency.
Formula One adopted ground effect later. Tony Rudd and Peter Wright at BRM experimented in 1968–69, and Robin Herd at March Engineering used a similar concept in 1970. Shawn Buckley, sponsored by Colin Chapman, worked on undercar aerodynamics from 1969, developing Venturi-like channels with flexible side skirts. In 1977, Lotus introduced the Lotus 78 'wing car' with inverted aerofoil sidepods and skirts, winning five races. The Brabham BT46B Fancar of 1978 used a fan for downforce but raced only once, winning the Swedish Grand Prix.
