Five-point harness

The five-point harness is a seat belt design with five straps anchored to a vehicle's frame. It was created to improve safety during crashes and is required in NASCAR because of the sport's high speeds. The harness is also used to secure infants and young children in child safety seats.

The design is preferred for its high level of protection. It uses two shoulder straps, two hip straps, and one crotch strap, all meeting at a central buckle. This holds the driver firmly in the seat, protecting the upper body. A drawback is that the driver's head is not secured by the harness alone.

To address this, helmets with restraints are used. In NASCAR, a HANS (head and neck support) device prevents brain and neck injuries during crashes or sudden speed changes.
