1956 Australian Grand Prix

The 1956 Australian Grand Prix was a Formula Libre race held at the Albert Park Street Circuit in Victoria, Australia on 2 December 1956. With 22 starters over 80 laps of the five kilometre circuit, it was the longest Australian Grand Prix at 402 kilometres and attracted over 120,000 spectators. The race was the twenty first Australian Grand Prix and the second at Albert Park, moved to December to capitalise on publicity from the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. The presence of the works Officine Alfieri Maserati team with Stirling Moss and Jean Behra made it the most important motor racing event in Australia's history to that point.
