Plot
Cody Gifford, a dirt track racer, built a 500cc superbike in his garage alongside his best friend and crew chief Chris Washburn and his girlfriend Jenny Eastman. They took the bike to the American qualifiers. There, even after his bike tipped over, Gifford matched the pace of two-time German world champion Klaus Kroeter, who rode a factory Samurai, until both riders crashed. Gifford then posted a quicker time than Kroeter at the Czechoslovak time trials. At the Belgian Grand Prix, Kroeter took the win while Gifford placed fourth. Afterward, Gifford agreed to join Kroeter as his teammate at Samurai, serving as a blocker and leaving his friends behind. Kroeter kept winning, but Gifford consistently put up strong fights against his own teammate. During the Austrian Grand Prix, Kroeter caused a crash that took out both Gifford and Italian rider Lalo Giacomo. Gifford’s bike exploded, and Giacomo broke his leg. Gifford quit and went home, only to find that his father Joe had died. Joe’s final letter expressed his wish for Cody to win the Grand Prix. Reuniting with his friends and girlfriend, Gifford rebuilt the bike. At the French Grand Prix, after several bikes overheated, Gifford sat in second place on the final lap, right behind Kroeter. Kroeter’s engine blew on the last turn, letting Gifford take the win while Kroeter limped across in sixth. Gifford became the new champion and celebrated with Cody, Jenny, and mechanic Fujimoto.
