Background
The team took shape in 1999 after the retirement of Wayne Rainey, who had run a factory-supported squad in the 500 cc class for the two years before; Kenny Roberts and Giacomo Agostini had earlier run their own works-backed Yamaha teams. First based in the Netherlands, the operation relocated to Italy in 2002. Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa formed the early line-up, and Biaggi took 8 race wins, first on the YZR500 and later on the YZR-M1. Marco Melandri then partnered Checa for a season without a single podium. The arrival of Valentino Rossi changed everything: he won the championship in his first year with 9 wins, then defended it alongside new teammate Colin Edwards with 11 victories.
