Life
Judith was the eldest daughter of Henry IX, Duke of Bavaria and Wulfhilde of Saxony, placing her in the House of Welf. She had three brothers, Henry, Conrad and Welf, and three sisters, Sophia, Matilda and Wulfhild, as well as a half-brother, Adalbert, from her father's relationship with an unnamed mistress. Between 1119 and 1121, she became the first wife of Frederick II, Duke of Swabia, a marriage that united the House of Welf and the House of Hohenstaufen. In 1125, her father initially backed her husband's candidacy to succeed Emperor Henry V as King of Germany but later switched support to Lothar III, creating lasting enmity between the Welfs and Swabians. No further children were born after their daughter Bertha in 1123. Judith died on 27 August 1130 and was buried at Waldburg in Heiligen Forest, Alsace. Frederick later married Agnes of Saarbrücken.
