Last updated
Andreas Martinsen is a Norwegian professional ice hockey left winger who has played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, and Chicago Blackhawks. He is notable for being the first Norwegian player involved in an NHL trade at the deadline and for leading all NHL rookies in hits per game during his debut season.
Lore & Background
Martinsen began his professional career in Norway with Lillehammer IK in the 2007–08 season, recording 20 points in 43 games as a 17-year-old. After further development in Sweden and Germany, he signed an entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche in 2015. He made his NHL debut on 9 November 2015 and scored his first goal ten days later. In his rookie season, he appeared in 55 games and led all NHL rookies in hits per game.
He was traded to the Montreal Canadiens on 1 March 2017, becoming the first Norwegian to be involved in an NHL trade at the deadline. After a brief stint with the Canadiens, he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in October 2017. He later played in the AHL and returned to Europe, eventually signing with Storhamar Hockey in Norway in 2023.
Reader's Guide
Martinsen's significance lies in his role as a physical checking forward who carved out an NHL career despite being undrafted and overlooked in the Canadian Hockey League import draft. His breakout season in the German DEL with Düsseldorfer EG in 2014–15, where he finished third on the team in scoring, earned him NHL interest. He became the eighth Norwegian to reach the NHL and the first Norwegian involved in a trade at the deadline.
His legacy includes leading all NHL rookies in hits per game in 2015–16, a testament to his physical style. After his NHL tenure, he continued his career in the AHL and European leagues, returning to Norway to play for Lillehammer, Vålerenga, and Storhamar. His international career includes seven consecutive IIHF World Championships appearances as of 2016.
