Cassette Beasts
A monster-taming RPG with cassette-based transformations.
Last updated
In Cassette Beasts, players use a cassette player to turn into monsters as they seek a way back to their own world, a concept inspired by the Pokémon series.[1] A BAFTA Games Award nomination in 2024 was received by the game, though it did not win.[1]
Making and release
During the Cassette Beasts Showcase 2024 video, a multiplayer update and a crossover with Moonstone Island were announced.[2] In June 2026, it was announced that a sequel Cassette Beasts 2002 is currently in development.[3] Bytten Studio, a UK-based company with just two full-time employees named Jay Baylis and Tom Coxon, created Cassette Beasts.[4] Baylis and Coxon both previously worked at Chucklefish and contributed to titles like Wargroove and Starbound.[4]
Part-time contributors to the game included an animator, a character illustrator, and a musician.[5] The Godot game engine was chosen for development because it allowed for an efficient workflow.[6] A partnership with Pineapple Works was formed to handle console ports, a decision influenced by the use of the Godot engine.[6] On its launch day, the game was made available on Xbox Game Pass.[6]
October 4, 2023, saw the release of Pier of the Unknown, a paid downloadable content expansion.[7]
What the cited sources add
Peeples also stated that Cassette Beasts streamlines the monster-collecting formula to remove unnecessary content.[8] Pocket Tactics Johnson reported that the developers shared a pool of around 20 colors across all 120 monsters to make them look like a true set.[5] Miller praised the sound design, noting the game's inclusion of rock, pop, and electronic music.[9]
