Monster Hunter Freedom is an action role-playing game released in 2005 by Capcom for the PlayStation Portable. As the first Monster Hunter title on a handheld system, it is an upgraded version of Monster Hunter G, with adjustments that make it easier to play through quests alone.

In the game, players complete missions and collect materials to improve their gear, which strengthens their character. Unlike typical hack-and-slash games, success against large monsters depends on planning and skill rather than raw force. Weapons include Sword and Shield, Great Swords, Dual Blades, Hammers, Lances, Light Bowguns, and Heavy Bowguns. Each weapon requires specific items, obtained by finishing quests, carving monsters, or gathering from the environment.

In singleplayer mode, players can take on village elder quests or enter the Offline Gathering Hall to do guild quests alone. They can also buy supplies and tend a farm to harvest useful items.

For multiplayer, the Online Gathering Hall lets players join quests with others using the PSP’s ad-hoc wireless connection. They can exchange guild cards that record character stats and participate in treasure hunting quests. While waiting for others, players can sit at a table and use the directional pad to perform animations like swinging a beer mug or pretending to pass out. Third-party software also allows internet play.

Hunter ranks range from HR1 to HR5. Higher ranks unlock tougher monsters and better items. G-Rank, new to this game, brings quests from Monster Hunter G (previously unreleased in the U.S. and Europe). These are much harder but offer better rewards and access to stronger monster variants called sub-species. Some monsters appear only in G-Rank.

According to Metacritic, the game received average reviews. In Japan, Famitsu gave it two nines and two eights, totaling 34 out of 40.
