Lore & Background
Her boast and catchphrase is "There is nothing I don't know, I know everything", though it is partly a bluff: in Shinobu Mustard she needs Koyomi's help to crack the codes behind the mummified girls. Her advice leads Mayoi to pass on to the afterlife without saying goodbye to Araragi. In return for helping Koyomi during Onimonogatari, she asks him to introduce her to Suruga Kanbaru while keeping secret that she is Kanbaru's aunt.
Reader's Guide
Where Meme wants compensation, Kaiki works for money and Yozuru works for free, Gaen asks for "friendship": people end up owing her favours, which she later calls in to get things done. She carries five cellphones and gave Koyomi three of her numbers during "Shinobu Time". Her surname matches the maiden name of Kanbaru's mother, Suruga having once been named Suruga Gaen.
