She died of lung cancer at home in Kraków on 1 February 2012, aged 88.[1] The 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Maria Wisława Anna Szymborska, a Polish poet, essayist, and translator.[2]
Life and work
She joined the staff of the literary review magazine Życie Literackie in 1953 and worked there until 1981.[3][1] Count Władysław Zamoyski employed Szymborska's father as his steward.[3] Following Zamoyski's 1924 death, the family relocated to Toruń, then in 1931 to Kraków, which remained Szymborska's home for the rest of her life.[3] "Dziennik Polski" published Szymborska's debut poem "Szukam słowa" ("Looking for words") in March 1945.[4][5]
At Jagiellonian University, Szymborska enrolled in Polish literature and later sociology, but financial hardship forced her to leave before earning a degree.[4][1] A 1953 political petition that condemned Polish priests charged with treason in a Kraków show trial was signed by Szymborska.[6][7] Kornel Filipowicz and Szymborska began a romantic partnership in 1967.[8] Readers of Poland's Gazeta Wyborcza voted Szymborska's final lifetime collection, Dwukropek, the finest book published in 2006.[3][1]
What the cited sources add
The France24 obituary notes that Szymborska was honored with Poland's highest distinction, The Order of the White Eagle, in her last year.[1] The same source states she had less than 400 poems published despite six decades of writing.[1] The same source notes her first book collection was blocked by censorship in 1949 before her debut Dlatego żyjemy appeared in 1952.[9]
